About Life Cycle: Grass grub is a native insect found throughout New Zealand in grassland and cropping areas and is considered New Zealand’s major lawn pest. They start as eggs from bronze beetles, turn into larvae, and then emerge as adults from their pupae. The larvae are the stage in the life cycle that causes the most damage as they feed on roots of pasture and crops, the damage usually appearing as yellowing patches from March to July. The main adult flight period is from October to December (mainly November in Canterbury), with flights being later in cooler regions. Females tend to mate as they emerge from the soil and lay the first cluster of eggs (7-20cm below the soil surface), Females may lay two or three batches of eggs over two to three weeks.
Larvae hatch after approximately 3 weeks and are feed immediately on roots, there are three stages of larval growth, called instars. The second instar occurs from mid-January to late February, moving up to the top 6cm of soil. The third instars develop through until June in the top 2-3cm of the soil and they then burrow down to about 25cm to over-winter. Control of grass grubs may be improved through an understanding of their lifecycle.
When to treat grass grubs: With Neem pack you take action on controlling grubs before they are the problem. In NZ recommended application is from February to late autumn, but also from sprint to summer. As per our recommendation During the late autumn and winter, the grubs do not eat in the top 5cm of soil. The grubs are usually found about 15 cm below the surface and control of the grub requires getting insecticide to this level in the soil. Treatment is most effective from February to March
How to treat grass grub: For the most effective result, we suggest spraying native neem organic certified neem insecticide around mid-January to March. Mix 10-15ml of native neem insecticide in 1Liter of warm water and spray on your grass. This mixture should cover around 3-5 m2 of area. After application lightly water the lawn with a hose so the insecticide can go down into the top 6 to 10 cm of the lawn. Repeat the same process after 2 weeks. This time after spraying neem insecticide, sprinkle native neem organic neem granules on the grass. You will need around 50-80 g hand-full granules to cover a 1-meter square area. Lightly racked around if necessary. Repeat the process with granules and insecticide every six-to-eight-week intervals till June end. You can use this process a couple of times from October to December if needed. During the summertime, you can reduce the neem insecticide dose from 10-15 ml to 5-10 ml per Liter of warm water.
A combination of Native neem insecticide and Native neem granules is especially good for combating grass grubs, poring, black beetle grubs, root mealy bugs, and nematodes in home and garden plants.
